How does EVLT Varicose Veins Treatment work?

A surgeon using EVLT will seal the diseased veins by inserting a laser optical fibre into a vein and heating the vein wall using laser light. Heating the vein wall causes the collagen in the vein wall to shrink and the vein to close. After the vein is sealed shut by the varicose veins treatment, blood then naturally re-routes to healthy veins.

What does the EVLT Varicose Vein Treatment involve?

The EVLT varicose veins treatment procedure starts after the surgeon has mapped out the vein using ultrasound.  Patients are given local anaesthetic and a tiny incision is  made, usually near the knee.

The tiny laser optical fibre is inserted and, when in position, the laser light is triggered to heat the vein wall and seal the faulty vein. As soon as the vein is closed, blood flow returns naturally to the healthy veins giving immediate relief from symptoms.

There may be some soreness or bruising, which can last up to 2 weeks, but simple over the counter non-aspirin pain killers will be sufficient to nutralise the discomfort.

Compared with traditional vein stripping surgery, EVLT has many benefits and makes effective varicose vein treatment a possibility for even the busiest patients.
